Wendy Rochman: CU South: Just say no to proposed plan. Just say no to the current, ill-conceived proposal for the development of CU South. You know we can do that, right? Say no to the University of Colorado Boulder?Say no to the vague promises of affordable housing in their proposal. CU’s other housing prices are above the average for Boulder. Say no to unnecessarily increasing traffic on Table Mesa Drive, which will turn Moorhead Avenue, an already-overused vehicle corridor, into a parking lot for CU students and a danger zone for elementary kids in their own neighborhood.Say no to CU’s unconfirmed building plan. No one really knows what CU will build out there, and they won’t get started planning until late 2021 at the earliest, but probably not until 2022.
Say no to eliminating a key habitat for two endangered species that reside at the property, Preble’s jumping mouse and Ute ladies’ tresses orchid. These species are protected. Say no to forking up $25 to $99 million of our own city tax dollars to haul in fill dirt to raise the level of the land for supposed flood mitigation. This flood zone is going to flood! Say yes to more sensible proposals that work better than the current proposal. (Yup, they exist, but CU doesn’t want you to know about them)Say no to CU’s plan, written and proposed by people who do not live in the area, and have no stake in the effects their plan will have on those of us who do live here. We lived through the flood, and we are stuck in the traffic every day. Just say no to committing to a highly controversial plan that would damage the wetland ecosystem, threaten two native endangered species, cost taxpayers millions, increase neighborhood traffic and add overpriced housing in a flood plain. This is a bad plan. Just say no. Wendy Rochman, Boulder |
